Eyes Of The Soul Art

By Artist Terry Lynn Smith

Terry participates each year in the Memory Project through John Tyler Community College. The Memory Project is a charitable nonprofit organization that invites art teachers and their students to create and donate portraits to youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as neglect, abuse, loss of parents, violence, and extreme poverty. The goal is to have the portraits help the children feel valued and important, to know that many people care about their well being, and to act as meaningful pieces of personal history in the future. Through participation in the Memory Project, the art students have an opportunity to creatively practice kindness and global awareness.

The organization receives photos of children and teens from global charities operating residential homes, schools, and care centers in a number of different countries every year. Participating art teachers are provided with full-page color prints as well as digital copies of those photos. The art teachers then work with their students to create the portraits, and those portraits are hand-delivered to the children by the Memory Project Organization. Visit the Memory Project Organization website to learn more.

Terry has painted portraits of children in Madagascar, Ghana, Nepal, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Peru, Uganda, Mynamar, Haiti and Ecuador. Each portrait is a gift for a child living half a world away and painting the portraits is a chance for Terry to give back and share what she has learned at John Tyler Community College.
